Smith & Cross Traditional Rum is a high proof Jamaican rum produced by the historic Smith & Cross company, whose origins tracing back to 1788 make them one of the oldest handlers of sugar and spirits in the London docks. This expression represents a deliberate revival of the intense, heavy bodied rums that defined the British Royal Navy and classic cocktail culture during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The production takes place in Jamaica at the historic Hampden Estate distillery, located in the Trelawny parish. The spirit is distilled using traditional copper pot stills from a mixture of molasses, skimmings, and dunder (the nutrient rich residue left over from previous distillations), which undergoes a long, slow fermentation using natural airborne yeasts. This specific release is a meticulous blend of two distinct marks: equal parts of Wedderburn (a heavy bodied spirit aged for less than a year) and Plummer (a medium bodied spirit aged for three years in oak casks). The rum is bottled at a traditional navy strength of 57% ABV with absolutely zero added sugar, colorings, or chill filtration.
The profile is extraordinarily loud, complex, and unadulterated, bursting with the characteristic Jamaican funk known as hogo. The nose is incredibly pungent, delivering immediate waves of overripe banana, grilled pineapple, brown sugar, heavy esters, and a sharp touch of varnish. On the palate, the liquid is thick and intensely warming, driving with robust flavors of dark molasses, exotic baking spices, tobacco leaf, and caramelized tropical fruits that completely fill the mouth. The finish is remarkably long, dry, and powerful, leaving a deep, resonant trail of charred wood, peppery spice, and persistent ester fruitiness.
