This exceptional sweet vermouth provides immediate premium value to curated cocktail programs and back-bar setups looking to showcase absolute historic depth. Built on a foundational base of ultra-aged sherries, it serves as a highly complex, robust asset for premium mixology, cutting through classic builds like a Manhattan or a Martinez with unparalleled structural elegance.
Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Vermut Rojo is produced in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, located in the notable Marco de Jerez region of Andalusia, Spain. To craft this liquid, the historic eighth-generation family estate adapted a recovered 19th-century house recipe.
The production is entirely distinct from standard European sweet vermouths. The base is an intentional blend of two premium sherries from their historic soleras: dry Oloroso Faraón and intensely sweet Pedro Ximénez Triana, both of which are aged for a minimum of 12 years in century-old American oak butts. Once married, this rich sherry foundation is infused with a meticulously selected blend of aromatic herbs and botanicals for an additional 4 to 6 months before being bottled at 15% ABV.
The nose is deeply intense and complex, leading with prominent aromas of warm cinnamon, sweet spices, and dried nuts, layered over bright citrus oils and a savory, characteristic oxidized note from the long oak aging. On the palate, it balances a velvety, rich texture with structural acidity. The natural honeyed sweetness of the Pedro Ximénez dominates upfront, bringing dark raisins and praline, which are quickly checked by the nutty dryness, fine bitter botanical notes, and complex wood spices of the Oloroso. The finish is remarkably long, clean, and evolving, leaving behind a subtle trace of herbal bitterness and warm citrus peel.
